NORTHSTAR CONCEPTS

  • WORKPLACE INSPECTIONS

We will conduct an OSHA-like physical inspection of your work areas, either on-site or at your remote jobsites. Inspections look for both above-standard conditions, as well as those that are substandard. We not only look at physical conditions (for example, the condition of working tools, walking working surfaces, etc.), but also at behaviors observed during the inspection (for example, compliance with personal protective equipment requirements, etc.).  We also look for both positive and negative trends when compared to your site’s previous inspections. At your discretion, photos will be taken during the inspection to document the findings.

Protecting anonymity, we will give you a comparative analysis of how your workplace inspections compare to other companies with similar work environments.

You will receive a detailed written report of the inspection within one working day of the inspection.

  • TOOLBOX SAFETY MEETINGS

NorthStar Concepts will conduct a toolbox safety meeting with your staff at a frequency determined by you. Most clients conduct monthly or bi-weekly safety meetings. Some want them weekly.  Toolbox Safety Meetings target critical topics tailored to your working environment risks. To be most effective, the Toolbox Safety Meetings also target findings from your most previous inspections. This is the most effective way of reinforcing positive findings, and correct areas that need improvement. The Toolbox Safety Meetings are most effective if conducted in your work environment. However, we also conduct these meetings in lunchrooms or conference rooms.

  • TOPRA

Our behavioral safety approach focuses on a behavior-based training solution.

Most workplace accidents occur when RUSHING, FRUSTRATION, FATIGUE or COMPLACENCY are involved. These “states” can result in critical errors of eyes not being on task, minds not being on task, being in the line-of-fire, or basic balance, traction and/or grip accidents.

Our simple, 2-hour TOPRA (Task Observation and Personal Risk Assessment) course will equip your employees to better manage these basic behavioral aspects, both on and off the job.

If your organization has 10 or more employees, you are required by federal regulations to report an OSHA 300 or 301 log annually, EVEN IF NO RECORDABLE INJURIES OCCRRED.

NorthStar Concepts will electronically report your safety data to OSHA annually and maintain your safety records throughout the year.

PREFATORY MONTH

If your organization would like to partner with NorthStar Concepts for a month to see if our services are a right fit for you, then our Prefatory Month is a great way to get started. We will conduct weekly inspections of your workplace (Workplace Inspections). During these inspections we will identify best practices and behaviors that are being done safely and recognize them to help reinforce continued high-level performance. We will also be identifying areas for improvement, and we will work with your team to develop an action plan for continual improvement.

We begin subsequent inspections by looking at the previous Workplace Inspections reports and identify any trends or action items that remain unresolved.

At the end of the Prefatory Month, we will supply your organization with a documented overall analysis of the month’s Workplace Inspections and give you an idea of how your inspections compare to other clients with similar workplace risks.

During the Prefatory Month we will conduct weekly Toolbox Safety Meetings (TSMs) with your staff. During the TSMs, we will discuss topics related to your specific risks. As the weekly workplace inspections occur, we will incorporate the findings from those reports into the TSMs. The TSMs are designed to be interactive, and we encourage your staff to actively participate by asking questions and offering suggestions for safety improvements. The TSMs will be documented to capture who attended, and any questions or improvement suggestions that occur during the meetings.

About
our company

Hello, I’m Ron Rhodes. I am a safety professional with over 42 years of experience in health and safety. I was the global Health and Safety Manager for TOTAL Energies, the largest energy company in Europe before my retirement.

For the first 20 years of my career, I served in various roles at a large chemical complex in La Porte, Texas. From working in the warehouse area as a forklift driver, to eventually becoming a first line supervisor in the operations area.

I was working at the La Porte plant on October 23, 1989, when the Phillips Petroleum complex suffered one of the worst explosions in the industry’s history. Twenty-three people were killed, and over 300 people were severely injured. The La Porte plant where I was working was only 2 miles away from that disaster, and I saw first-hand how important safety is, and how devastating unmanaged risks can be.

Largely because of the Phillips Petroleum complex disaster, I changed my career path to work on improving process and personal safety. I served as the Process Safety Coordinator at the La Porte plant from 1992 until 1996. In 1996, I moved to the corporate level and was responsible for process safety across four chemical plants and a large refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. I led a team in the development of safety management system (AIMS: Advanced Integrated Management System) for all the US operations. In 2013, I took an assignment in Paris, France as the Global Management Systems Manager to develop a management system for all of TOTAL’s global operations. I retired from TOTAL Energies in 2017.

During my career, I conduced more that 1,600 audits of facilities around the world. I’ve trained more than 2,900 people in many aspects of safety and safety management. From behavioral safety factors, to training those responsible for conducting accident incident investigations.

Process safety begins with properly designed equipment and maintaining that equipment. But personal safety begins with everyone taking responsibly for their safety, and the safety of those around them.

It is my passion to partner with companies to improve the safety of their workplaces. This requires a clean working environment, where the risks are both identified and controlled. .
